SEMINAR | Agroforestry and syntropic systems: developing and promoting agricultural sustainability on Madeira Island through the implementation of regenerative and resilient agricultural systems for the environment and the community
During the seminar, the main themes of the thesis project will be presented, along with an overview of the methodological approaches employed. The study is situated within the framework of agroecology, with a particular focus on the cultural and social dimensions that characterize the subject matter. The project aims to outline a concrete and practical alternative to conventional agricultural models, providing integrated and systemic responses to the environmental, economic, and social challenges specific to the context of Madeira Island, with the objective of strengthening the region’s food security. Concurrently, it seeks to foster a collective awareness of the urgency to support alternative agricultural models, rooted in the local territory and based on the valorisation of local resources, environmental protection, and the central role of rural communities. The approach adopted integrates ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions, following a systemic and participatory vision of change. Finally, the project’s educational and dissemination aspects will also be addressed, which are fundamental in raising community awareness and promoting the sharing and dissemination of knowledge, both at academic and broader societal levels, in order to encourage lasting change deeply embedded in the social and cultural fabric.
